Shorts
Our shorts evening features six short films exploring different aspects of Palestinian life, culture and resistance. Featuring An Orange from Jaffa, Voice Notes from Palestine, Mar Mama, Dear Child II, No Words and The Deer’s Tooth.
No Words
Amid city-wide protests in London, Palestinian artist & activist Malak Mattar embarks on her most audacious artistic endeavour. Recalling her experiences growing up in occupied Gaza, she paints a colossal document of mourning and resistance. No Words (dir. Hunter Logan, 2024) documents and participates in the global call for a ceasefire to the Israel-Hamas war. This screening is the World premier.
Mar Mama
With her mother’s death and recurring attacks by Israeli forces on her city, a young girl becomes obsessed with death. Her father makes a film to distract her but he fails and the girl finds nothing but imagination to escape from reality.
The Deer’s Tooth
A young man from a refugee camp embarks on a perilous journey in order to fulfil his little brother’s wish: to throw his milk tooth into the sea.
Dear Child
Written as a letter to a child in Gaza by Pulitzer prize winning author Chris Hedges, the film takes the audience on a haunting & realistic journey through Gaza today from a child’s perspective imbued with guilt of a foreign journalist that transcends the screen.
Voice Notes from Palestine
The students featured in Voice Notes from Palestine participated in a 2023 online course led by Dr. Iain Overton, Executive Director of AOAV, designed to teach them social media storytelling techniques. These students, all living with disabilities, shared their personal experiences of conflict.
